Meals for two lakhs every day

Preparations at a mass kitchen in Coimbatore ahead of the World Classical Tamil Conference.

Participants and visitors to the World Classical Tamil Conference, beginning here on Wednesday (June 23), will have not only literary and cultural treats to relish but also the best of hospitality.

Food Minister E.V. Velu told The Hindu on Tuesday that arrangements had been made to serve food to about two lakh people on each day of the conference. Around 430 counters at the conference complex would have nearly 1,500 people to serve food to the public. “The estimate is that about two lakh people will have food every day at the conference complex,” he said. Apart from these, three food courts would cater to the seminar participants. A separate food court was set up for volunteers and assistants. Outside the premises, about 100 counters had been set up at the parking spaces for the drivers. Besides, counters had been set up near 21 seminar halls to serve snacks, tea, water and fruit juice.

Mr. Velu said food would be prepared in 10 mass kitchens located in different parts of the city and each kitchen had three food inspectors to ensure hygienic preparation.
