The World Classical Tamil Conference was inaugurated by President Pratibha Patil

WORLD CLASSICAL Tamil Conference (Ulaga Thamizh Semmozhi Manadu) was inaugurated by the President of India, Pratibha Devsingh Patil at Coimbatore today at 12 noon. The President unveiled Thiruvallur's picture which is the base of World Classical Tamil Conference emblem.
President Pratibha Patil spoke of peace and harmony and expressed her best wishes for the present WCTC Conference. The conference will continue till June 27, 2010. The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu said that the five days long grand celebration will strengthen the bonds of tamil people in world.
At 10 am today, World classical Tamil Conference began in the presence of President Pratibha Patil Tamil Nadu governor Surjit Singh Barnala, chief minister Karunanidhi, M K Stalin, Finance Minister K Anbazhagan, Chief Secretary K S Sripathi and scholars like Professor George Hart, Dr. V.C. Kulandaisamy, and Dr. K. Sivathamby of Sri Lanka.
During the conference there will be exhibits depicting Tamil arts, culture, language, literature, and the history of Tamil. The exhibition will present objects of pottery, figurines, bricks, and seals, bathtubs etc., which were excavated from the Indus Valley apart from Chola bronzes, stone inscriptions, and statues from various ages.

The Academic programmes will consist of plenary sessions, symposia, special lectures and presentation of papers. 55 programmes will be conducted during the five days’ programme schedule of the WCTC which are featured in this event are as follows:

Many Tamil scholars and writers from other states and countries are attending the conference. Union and state ministers are attending the function.

Two commemorative gold coins weighing 2 gms and 4 gms have been launched by the State of Bank of India to mark the World Classical Tamil Conference. The chief minister spoke in both languages, English as well as regional language Tamil, in the inaugural function ceremony. There will be a “Special Karutharngam,” presided by Chief Minister Karunanidhi, in which all political leaders will participate— K Veeramani, L Ganesan, Rama Veerappan, Sitaram Yechury, Sridhar Vandaiyar, Poovai Jagan Moorthy, Dawood Miakan, Ponkumar, Chellamuthu, K V Thangkabalu, Dr. S. Ramadoss, D. Raja, Thol Thirumavalavan, K M Kader Mohideen. The Hindu Editor, N.Ram too will be be present.
Private firms are maintaining roadside parking areas to facilitate huge numbers of vehicles, including two wheelers and four wheelers. As many as 10,000 police personals are deployed for the conference to avoid any serious incident.
There will be exhibits depicting Tamil arts, culture, language, literature, and the history of Tamil and a coverage of around 9 km. from VOC grounds in the heart of the city of Coimbatore to CODISSIA grounds, the venue of the Conference. The procession will have 40 floats displaying paintings and models of sculptures depicting the glory of Tamil culture. The floats will portray rare and resplendent scenes from the ancient Sangam classics and reflect the richness of the Tamil people and their culture
The President along with the Tamil Nadu chief minister, M.Kanunanidhi, will witness the procession of the floats from a specially erected dais at the Coimbatore college and after that President Pratibha Patil will leave for New Delhi.
Since early morning there is a celebratory atmosphere in the World Classical Tamil Conference venue, as well as in CODISSIA Trade Center
AIADMK Chief Jayalalitha and her party skipped the World Classical Tamil Conference which is organized by DMK chief K. M.Karunanidhi..
